At a time of vicious attacks on immigrants, with the issue of immigration routinely framed as an "invasion" and a "drain on public resources," this feature-length documentary Harvest of Empire, examines the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigrant population here today. Through interviews with well-known personalities (such as Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Rigoberta Menchú, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Díaz, Mexican historian Dr. Lorenzo Meyer, journalist Maria Hinojosa, poet Martín Espada), rare archival material, and present-day immigrant stories, we see the true origins of massive migrations from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Nicaragua. "They never teach us in school that the huge Latino presence here is a direct result of our own government's actions in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America over many decades -- actions that forced millions from that region to leave their homeland and journey north," says Juan González at the beginning of the film.
Featured on Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! this past week - check out her show, with excerpts from the film [here].

Arizona's "show me your papers" law goes into effect [this week]. The Charlotteobserver.com writes that "There, according to a recent report by the National Immigration Law Center, an immigrant advocacy group, law enforcement officers have created an 'environment of racial profiling' that has encouraged private citizens to discriminate and abuse people they regard as foreign."
Why do people come here from all over the world? Check out this clip from Revolution: Why It's Necessary, Why It's Possible, What It's All About, a film of a talk by Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA, given in 2003 in the U.S. This talk, followed by questions and answers, is a wide-ranging revolutionary journey, covering many topics. It breaks down the very nature of the society we live in and how humanity has come to a time where a radically different society is possible. It is full of heart and soul, humor and seriousness; it will challenge you and set your heart and mind to flight.
