On the "Driving Force of Anarchy" and the Dynamics of Change - Join the Discussion Sunday

Received from the Revolution Club-LA

Discussion and Salon
Sunday, April 2
5 PM
2716 S. Vermont, #8 (upstairs)
 (just south of Adams)

The world is a horror because of the system of capitalism-imperialism.
  • Is this true? Why or why not?
  • What is capitalism?
  • What are the dynamics of capitalism?
  • Can capitalism be reformed?
  • Can society be organized differently and why do we need a revolution to accomplish that?
We encourage everyone participating to read the entire article before the discussion.

"The world is a horror. More precisely, the world created and reinforced by capitalism-imperialism is one of unjust wars and brutal occupations, of life-crushing poverty and savage inequality, of the pervasive subordination and degradation of women. This is a world-and here it is proper to speak of the planet-on which accelerating environmental crisis is not only part of the warp and woof of everyday life, but threatening the very ecological balances and life-support systems of Earth.

The suffering of world humanity and the perilous state of the planet are, at their core, the outcome of the workings of the fundamental contradiction of our epoch: between highly socialized, interconnected, and globalized forces of production, on the one hand; and relations of private ownership and control over these forces of production, on the other. But locked within this contradiction is the potential for humanity to move beyond scarcity, beyond exploitation, and beyond social division-the potential to organize society on a whole different foundation that will enable human beings to truly flourish.

Which is to say, the world as it is...is not the way it must and can only be."

This week:

Building the Wallan Interview with Playwright Robert Schenkkan

Building the Wall, a powerful new play by Robert Schenkkan, is scheduled to play in six cities -- so far -- beginning with the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles. It's the very near future, and the Trump administration has carried out his campaign promise to round up and detain millions of immigrants. Now, a writer interviews the supervisor of a private prison as he awaits sentencing for carrying out the federal policy that has escalated into the unimaginable.

We'll speak with Robert Schenkkan, who wrote the play in seven days last fall, as the election loomed. He'll talk about why he wrote it, and the effort to have it performed as widely, and as soon, as possible. Robert Schenkkan is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright, and an Academy Award nominated screenwriter.

Josh Willis on the Dramatic Melting of the Arctic

Since the Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG) study was launched in 2015, by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, scientists have made some dramatic, and disturbing, findings about the rate and mechanism of the melting, and its contribution to destructive sea level rises.

We'll speak with oceanographer and climatologist Josh Willis, the principal investigator with OMG, about their findings, and what it means for the future.

The March for Science

Scientists and others in defense of science are scheduled to march in theMarch for Science
on April 22 against the attacks on science and truth, and in support of the role of science in government and public policy, and for the very integrity of the scientific process itself. Along with a major march in Washington, DC, there are more than 400 satellite marches in cities across the country and the world. Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, are expected on the 22nd across the country-and the world. We'll speak with Brant Olson, Executive Director ofClimateTruth.org, a group that helped organize the #StandUpForScience rally and is assisting in the March for Science.

Peter Gleick on the March for Science

and the Climate March

Peter Gleick, a leading scientist on global water and climate issues, and co-founder of the Pacific Institute in Oakland, recently wrote about why scientists should be in the streets protesting the policies of the Trump regime, both in the Climate March on April 29, and the March for Science, April 22, Earth Day.

We'll talk to him about that, and about "the uninhibited use of lies, false statements, blatant and intentional misrepresentations of fact, and bad science," by Trump and many others in his administration.

#NoBanNoWallNoRaids

The Trump/Pence regime is moving quickly in its assault on immigrants, a key part of its fascist program.
  • Trump has laid siege to immigrant communities, setting in motion attacks on immigrants whose only "crime" is being driven to this country, working, going to school, and trying to survive.

  • The Trump administration issued a new order a Muslim ban, which would not only block hundreds of millions of Muslim people from immigrating, fleeing to, or even visiting the U.S., but also opens the door to including many more countries in the ban, as well as pointing a finger of suspicion at Muslims who have lived in the U.S. for decades, including citizens.
We'll hear from:
Matt Adams, legal director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NIRP) in Seattle, on the impact of the Muslim ban, and the fight against it. The NIRP was one of several immigrant rights groups who have sued to stop Muslim ban from taking effect.
Rachel Ida Buff, professor of history and comparative ethnic studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has written about the terror created in immigrant communities from weeks of ICE raids, and the need for creating sanctuaries, and the need for collective resistance. Her new book,
Against the Deportation Terror: Organizing for Immigrant Rights in the Twentieth Century, will be out later this year.

Recommended, from Refuse Fascism:
Why the Trump/Pence Regime Is Fascist, Why It Must Be Driven Out

Refuse Fascism-LA hosts a viewing of a Teach-in
originating in New York City

Friday, March 17 @ 7 PM
Peace Center in Culver City
3916 Sepulveda (between Venice & Washington Blvds.)

"The Trump/Pence Regime is a Fascist Regime. Not insult or exaggeration, this is what it is....Donald Trump and Mike Pence have assembled a vicious cabal that has put forth positions and begun initiatives which demonstrate that they fully intend to shred political and social norms with catastrophic consequence. Because Trump has his finger on the nuclear trigger, the Trump/Pence regime is more dangerous to the world than even Hitler..." (from the Refuse Fascism Call to Action)
Is this true?
What is Fascism?
How is the Trump/Pence Regime moving to institute a fascist form of rule?
What will this look like and how fast could it happen?
Is there a way to stop it?
What does this mean for what each of us, and all of us together, must do?
Andy Zee of the Refuse Fascism Advisory Board will dig into these questions. His talk will go deeply into the Refuse Fascism Call to Action.

This is a live Facebook event so if you can't make it to the Peace Center, watch here at 4 PM Pacific Time.

Break the Chains! Unleash the Fury of Women
as a Mighty Force for Revolution

Screening and discussion of excerpts on the oppression and liberation of women from the film of  Bob Avakian's talk
BA Speaks: Revolution--Nothing Less
If you are concerned about, and standing up to, the oppression of women... and outraged by the threat the Trump-Pence fascist regime poses to women and all of humanity...the most important thing you can know now is this. There is an answer to WHY this horrendous, ages-old oppression is still going on and intensifying. And there is an answer to HOW this oppression can be eliminated from the face of the planet. Bob Avakian, the architect of a new stage of communist revolution, and leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party USA, has done the work of analyzing the cause of this situation... making that understanding available...and on that basis leading people to carry forward the revolutionary struggle to actually eliminate the oppression of women and all oppression. Don't you need to know?

Come find out more. Be part of the viewing and take part in the discussion.

Trump, and the Beginning of Mass Deportations, with Margaret Regan

In the wake of rule changes for deportations issued by Trump,
Margaret Regan wrote, "
Under the new rules, 'deportable' criminal aliens are not just those who have been convicted of a crime. Now, undocumented people who have only been charged with a crime are priorities for deportation. Even worse, agents, acting as cop, judge and jury, could round up immigrants who the officers believe committed some undefined act that could warrant charges. This marks a breathtaking expansion of police powers and abandons the hard-and-fast American principle of innocent until proven guilty." We'll talk about these and other ominous changes.
Margaret Regan is a longtime journalist in Tucson, Arizona, and the author of
Detained and Deported: Stories of Immigrant Families Under Fire.

Sunsara Taylor: Trump and the War on Women

The fascist Trump/Pence administration has already begun to carry out their threats against women's rights and women's lives: the global gag order, plans to defund Planned Parenthood, and other threats to women's health care.

We'll talk to Sunsara Taylor about this, and the resistance that's necessary. Sunsara Taylor is a writer for Revolution/revcom.us, and an initiator of Refuse Fascism. She is currently part of the Refuse Fascism Drive Out the Trump/Pence Regime National Tour.
