Underway!

"Let's Go!" was the spirit of the first
hours of the BAsics Bus Tour two-week
pilot project. It launched with great
fanfare in Los Angeles on Tuesday
(see below), was in Riverside Wed.
and Thurs. this week, and today is in
Orange County. See next stops below.

Where the tour is going today and this weekend: Join in and
send others!

* The BAsics Bus Tour in the OC (Orange County)! (Fri., Sat. and
Sun., Feb. 10-12) in Fullerton, Santa Ana and Anaheim; then they
will head up north [click here for schedule after Orange County].

FRIDAY, Feb. 10th, Fullerton and Anaheim

* Fullerton State University, 10 to 2 pm - the bus will be right
in the middle of campus, next to the student union!

* Unitarian Universalist Church, 6:30 pm, in Anaheim, "Potlucks
for Progressives" is hosting a potluck dinner for the BAsics Bus
Tour, called "A Better World is Possible." 511 South Harbor Blvd.,
Anaheim, CA 92805. Potluck at 6:45 pm; program at 7:15 pm.
Come and share your ideas for a better world.

SATURDAY, Feb. 11th, Santa Ana

* Soccer fields at Centennial Park, early morning in Santa Ana

* Anti-Mall event, 11 am to 3 pm, look for the BAsics Tour bus
at this "People B4 Profit Marketplace" at El Centro Cultural de
Mexico, 313 N. Birch Street Santa Ana.

* Librería Martinez, 4 to 6 pm, spanish reading / discussion of
Lo BAsico / BAsics with the BAsics Bus Tour riders, 216 N.
Broadway (one door away from Subway on the corner), in
downtown Santa Ana.

* Mariachi Vargas de Tetalitlan, at The City National Grove of
Anaheim, internationally acclaimed as the "best mariachis in the
world." The performance begins at 8 pm. Look for the BAsics
Bus Tour as the crowds leave from 9:30 to 10:30 pm, 2200 East
Katella Avenue in Anaheim.

First stop: early morning, Tues., Feb. 7th, 7th & Alvarado.
"We stayed for a couple hours, talked with a lot of people, mainly
immigrants from Mexico and Central America, and sold some
copies of Lo BAsico and BAsics. A woman who bought Lo BAsico
remarked that the Bus 'stopped me in my tracks!'"

Next was the launch celebration (with pizza), Tues., Feb. 7th, noon -
at Revolution Books L.A. "Statements from various people voiced
support for the Tour and, from different points of view, what they
thought was important about BAsics."

"In the afternoon we went to Watts. Soon a very boisterous group
of Black high school youth came up and mulitiple conversations
and debates broke out as people clustered around the displays.
One youth, after firing a series of hard questions at the
revolutionaries remarked to his friends, 'This is interesting,
these people are serious.'"

"Today was a good day, the light rain that fell from time to time
did not dampen our spirits. It was a good start. We felt we
learned a lot. Tomorrow: Riverside."

Occasioned by BAsics: A Celebration of Revolution and a New World

Yesterday Revolution Books LA held an exciting fundraising event to

contribute to this effort with Michael Slate and two members of

Outernational band who performed at the April 11 celebration in Harlem.

After viewing the film trailer, the three speakers talked about what it

was like to be part of a cultural event that portends a different and

better future, sharing their favorite parts of the evening.

We raised $1,259 at this event, surpassing our goal of $1,000. After

we collected $300 at the door, an immigrant made a generous sacrifice

of $300 to make sure this film is made. After the lofty fund pitch, we

passed the hat, gathering another $275 from the full house, and then

raised the remainder from the sale of 150 delicious tlayocos (Mexican

empanadas) which were made by an unemployed person who loves

reading Revolution newspaper and has begun reading BAsics.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this fundraiser a success and a

lot of fun, too!

worldwide. Profound discontent with the inequality and injustice in this

what appear to be coordinated attacks to savagely evict encampment after

URGENT: BAIL NEEDED!!

Tuesday night, as you undoubtedly saw, in person or on the news, the largest encampment of the Occupy movement was shut down. 300 courageous protesters, including several Revolution Books staff and supporters, were surrounded and arrested by a massive force of 1,400 riot police, armed with sonic weapons, bean bag guns, and more. Many other people stood in solidarity at City Hall, while still more were blocked by police from joining the defense of Occupy L.A. Clearly, this national movement has stung the powers-that-be who find it unacceptable for people to begin to live a new collective ethos and to resist the horrors of today's world.

The arrestees have been denied release on their own recognizance, and are being held on $5,000 bail each, for a misdemeanor charge. This punitive charge is meant to prevent continued resistance to the attack and to try to cripple the movement financially. Donate generously to bail out our volunteer staff and supporters so they can immediately continue their work. As quoted in the Nov. 29th LA Times editorial, "At the Revolution Books table, Nicole Lee explained, 'It's a protracted struggle.'"

Defend Occupy LA!

L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Beck announced on Friday that Occupy Los Angeles will be dismantled, and gave a deadline of 12:01 AM Monday morning, November 28th, for occupiers to leave.

Occupy LA (OLA) has posted this response on their website [occupylosangeles.org], which is a re-post of their October 26th, 2011 statement: "As for a time stamp on our departure, there is none; we are resolved to continue our peaceful occupation..Occupiers across America are bravely and against great odds and obstacles exercising the right to have their voices heard in a public forum; we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around this nation and around the globe."

Earlier, on Wed., Nov. 23th, the OLA General Assembly (GA) passed with full consensus the following in part: "As a collective, Occupy Los Angeles would like to express their rejection of the City of Los Angeles' alleged proposal that we leave City Hall by November 28th, 2011, in exchange for an apparently now rescinded offer of a 10,000 square foot building, farmland and 100 SRO beds for the homeless." At that GA they also renamed City Hall Park, SOLIDARITY PARK.

A call has gone out on Occupy LA's Facebook for an"Eviction Block Party" from 11:30 pm on Sunday, Nov. 27th to 5:00 am Monday morning. They recommend coming down early, as the LAPD is reportedly planning to shut down the streets surrounding City Hall. A protest is also called for 11:00 pm Sunday evening.

ON A PLANET WHERE OVER A BILLION PEOPLE LIVE
ON LESS THAN $2 A DAY, FACING THE PROSPECT OF
STARVATION... where the lives of millions of children
are cut short by curable diseases... where brutal wars
grind on in Iraq and Afghanistan and hellholes like
Guantánamo stay "open for business"...where nooses
spring up like weeds, immigrants are hunted and the
availability of abortion is rapidly disappearing...where
youth are treated as either criminals or commodities...
and where all this is totally UNNECESSARY-the world
badly needs revolution.

Revolutionary state power will set about ending these
horrors and meeting the pressing needs of the people.
But a truly emancipatory socialism must do more than
that. It must lay the basis, and take concrete steps,
toward a society where people consciously change
the world and themselves, in a society of freely
associating human beings and where the need for
any kind of state has been surpassed.

In that light, Bob Avakian has done path-breaking work to go beyond
even the best of the previous socialist societies and re-envisioned
a socialism that is both visionary and viable. His "new synthesis"

Last night, in the reclaimed Oscar Grant Plaza and in the wake of the massive police assault on Occupy Oakland, their general assembly passed a proposal to shut down and liberate the city of Oakland on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd: "We invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city...The whole world is watching Oakland. Occupy Wall Street (OWS) saw hundreds take to the streets last night in solidarity with Occupy Oakland. [Watch youtube here.] And OWS is calling for nationwide vigils onight for Scott Olsen, the Iraq veteran against the war who was slammed in the head by a police projectile during the assault in Oakland and remains in critical condition.
Yesterday, as Occupy Oakland was under siege, the L.A. Mayor and various city officials announced to Occupy LA that it is time to "move on." OLA responded with a statement that says in part, "As for a time stamp on our departure, there is none...We are resolved to continue our peaceful occupation...Occupiers across America are bravely and against great odds and obstacles exercising the right to have their voices heard in a public forum, we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around this nation and around the globe." In an act of tremendous courage, for 20 days, from July 1

to July 20, 6,500 prisoners across California took part in an

unprecedented hunger strike action, crossing racial lines, to

demand an end to torture. On Monday, September 26, 2011

prisoners in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay

State Prison (PBSP) have declared they will resume their

hunger strike.

As we watch the horror of the execution of Troy Anthony

Davis in Georgia, where the U.S. Supreme Court and the

President refused to act to stop a towering crime, who will

now step out to fight to change the entire direction of society

and the world, and stop the cruel torture regime inflicted on

prisoners across the U.S.?

We all got to be in West Hollywood on Monday, September

26 - to say no to torture of SHU prisoners in CA, no to the

torture of prisoners anywhere in the USA or around the world.

WEAR ORANGE! Bring your signs in support of the hunger

striking prisoners and their 5 demands.

The resumption of the hunger strike is an extremely significant

and extraordinary development. Many inmates put their health

and lives on the line; many came close to death and experienced

medical emergencies in July 2011. Millions of people outside

the prison walls in the U.S. and worldwide learned about the

tortuous conditions these prisoners face and thousands

supported the demands of the prisoners in diverse ways.

Now the hunger strike of prisoners is set to resume Monday,

September 26. What are the prisoner demands? To be treated

as human beings; to end barbaric, inhumane conditions of

imprisonment - particularly the SHU's -- and to stop long term

solitary confinement as a form of torture.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

(CDCR) is not only refusing to meet the prisoner's demands,

it is retaliating against those who participated in the hunger

strike and mounting a public relations campaign to defend

the barbaric conditions in the SHU.

We have a moral responsibility to act in a way commensurate

with the justness of the prisoners' demands and the urgency

of the situation. A determined movement outside the walls of

prison is urgently needed to expose and demand an end to

these high-tech torture chambers called "SHU's". We aim to

break into the media with this action!

Think about everything that makes you human... that keeps you

physically and mentally alive... that connects you with the

world and other people... that gives you a reason to live, to

love, to learn and think.... All this is what the SHU tries to

extinguish. In the SHU you're locked up in a small, windowless

concrete cell 23 hours a day, with minimum human contact and

maximum sensory deprivation. Human rights groups in the U.S

and internationally have documented the inhumane conditions -

these are crimes against humanity. And the fact is tens of

thousands of prisoners across the U.S. are being held in the

Tuesday morning, September 20:

The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has

denied Troy Davis clemency. This means that they

have upheld his execution which is scheduled for

Wednesday, September 21 at 7:00pm.

This is a complete and utter outrage and shows

once again the bankruptcy of a system that will

execute a potentially innocent man in the face of

mounting evidence of reasonable doubt.

witnesses have since recanted or changed their testimony.

We will read out loud the last essay in BAsics, "The

Revolutionary Potential of the Masses and the
Responsibility of the Vanguard" and get people's

An Appeal to Those the System Has Cast Off

Here I am speaking not only to prisoners but to
those whose life is lived on the desperate edge, whether or not they find some work; to those
without work or even homes; to all those the
system and its enforcers treat as so much human

waste material.

Raise your sights above the degradation and
madness, the muck and demoralization, above
the individual battle to survive and to "be
somebody" on the terms of the imperialists - of
fouler, more monstrous criminals than
mythology has ever invented or jails ever held.
Become a part of the human saviors of humanity:
the gravediggers of this system and the

bearers of the future communist society.

This is not just talk or an attempt to make poetry
here: there are great tasks to be fulfilled, great struggles to be carried out, and yes great
sacrifices to be made to accomplish all this. But

there is a world to save - and to win-and in that
process those the system has counted as
nothing can count for a great deal. They
represent a great reserve force that must
become an active force for the proletarian

This special issue will feature letters from prisoners, as well as others, in response to this appeal. Letters and visual art from those who are rising above the muck and mire can inspire and challenge many others-from the communities of the oppressed to students, teachers and professors, artists and others who agonize about the unjust society we live in-to question the way things are and think about the possibility of real revolutionary change. This issue will concentrate that powerful call and be a living challenge to all those who live day-to-day in the most desperate conditions to get into Bob Avakian, to know about and study his talks and writings... to defend and protect him... take up the leadership he is providing. And to join in this movement we are building for revolution to bring a new world into being.
