Jerry Lembcke, Sitting for the National Anthem
As Colin Kaepernick heroically refuses to stand for the National Anthem, it has become a major controversy, confronting people with the choice of continuing to participate in America's disgusting patriotic ritual, or taking a stand against it. Jerry Lembcke, sociologist, author -- and Vietnam veteran -- recalls the great risks GIs took as they began to understand the role of the US military and the crimes it was carrying out, and to heroically defy military authorities, refusing to salute or stand for the flag and the National Anthem. And he tells his own story of being challenged to take a stand when he rotated back to the States from Vietnam in 1970.
Jerry Lembcke is Associate Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Holy Cross College, and the author of The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam and PTSD.

On the one side is President Alan Garcia, who, eager to enter the world stage, begins aggressively extracting oil, minerals, and gas from untouched indigenous Amazonian land. He is quickly met with fierce opposition from indigenous leader Alberto Pizango, whose impassioned speeches against Garcia's destructive actions prove a powerful rallying cry to throngs of his supporters. When Garcia continues to ignore their pleas, a tense war of words erupts into deadly violence.

New York City Council Condemns BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) Movement against Israel

September 14, the New York City Council, voted 40 - 4 to condemn the BDS Movement after a session during which council members strained to convert constitutionally protected BDS speech and activity into per se anti-Semitism, while police expelled pro-BDS people from the audience. Stanley Cohen, who joins us to talk about the decision, called it, "A perverse leap of faith similar to the sinister shroud of supremacy worn by the Reichstag supporters of the 30's at a time when today's Palestinians were yesteryear's Jews."
Stanley Cohen is an attorney and human rights advocate. Among the others he has represented are hackers, Occupy activists, the homeless, anti-war protesters, Muslim clerics, American Indian activists, supporters of Peru's Shining Path guerrillas, Black Bloc anarchists, and Anonymous in the PayPal 14 case. He was recently targeted by the US government and sent to prison for 18 months for tax law violations.
