Michael Mann: How Climate Change Worsened the Impact of Hurricane Harvey and Other Storms

Dr. Michael Mann is
Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State, and the director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center (ESSC). He joins us to talk about what he called, "The role of climate change in the unprecedented disaster that is unfolding in Houston with Hurricane Harvey." He recently wrote that, "There are certain climate change-related factors that we can, with great confidence, say worsened the flooding." The deadly impacts of climate change are now all around us.

Jerry Lembcke: Why Ken Burns' New Vietnam War Series Teaches a Flawed, Misleading Lesson

A new documentary series is airing on PBS, "The Vietnam War," by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. CNN wrote, "PBS has again provided Burns with a huge canvas, and he has responded by painting a masterpiece, one that distinguishes public television at a moment when it yet again finds itself under siege and facing an existential challenge.Jerry Lembcke disagrees. "The new film distorts what scholars, veterans and antiwar activists alike know about the war and its aftermath," he wrote on Alternet.

Jerry Lembcke is Associate Professor Emeritus at College of the Holy Cross. He is the author of The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam and Hanoi Jane: War, Sex, and Fantasies of Betrayal.

Walking to Buchenwald

We'll also hear an interview with Playwright Tom Jacobson, the writer of
Walking to Buchenwald, a new play by the Open Fist Theatre Company, currently at the Atwater Village Theatre.

The play is called a comedy with shattering consequences. It is a deceptively sweet story in which a soon-to-be-married couple, Schiller and Arjay, take Schiller's parents on their first trip to Europe, in a rapidly changing world.

Walking to Buchenwald's stunning conclusion delivers a powerful challenge -- How are we, all of us living in the US in 2017, not going to be like the Germans in 1933?

Sunday 5pm, Fundraising Dinner for the RNC16

From the Revolution Club - LA:

Join the Revolution Club LA, this Sunday, September 17,
for a Fundraising Dinner/Potluck for the RNC 16
and the Revolution Club Defense

On July 20, 2016, in protest of Trump's nomination, Gregory "Joey" Johnson along with the Revolution Club went right up to the gates of the Republican National Convention and declared: "We're standing with the people of the world today!...Donald Trump is an open fascist. Hillary Clinton is a proven war criminal...we are not following either one of their leaders...America #1? America first? It always has been first: at genocide, at slavery, at exploitation, at destruction of the environment, at torture...we are standing here with the people of the world today.

Then Joey Johnson lit the American flag as he stood in the middle of a safety circle of the Revolution Club who chanted "1, 2, 3, 4, Slavery, Genocide and War! 5, 6, 7, 8, America Was Never Great!

Joey Johnson along with the Revolution Club were brutally arrested, 2 of the RNC 16, Niko and Bo, were slapped with Felony charges, which were dropped on Wednesday, after a year of persecution.  But there are still 12 misdemeanor cases pending.  Read more HERE.

Join us for a celebration fundraising dinner for this and for other cases that are pending for members of the Revolution Club, including fees due from arrests on April 15, 2015 -- a national day of protest against police terror.

Sunsara Taylor, Driving Fascists Off Campus, and the Shameful Attacks on Antifa

UC Berkeley has emerged in the cross-hairs of fascists. In particular, Ben Shapiro, an intellectual advocate for fascism, and Milo Yiannopoulos, an outright fascist provocateur, are scheduled to appear on campus this month. The fascists are saying this is only the beginning. Steve Bannon, Ann Coulter and others have reportedly been invited for several days of Nazi events in late September.

The UC administration and the Berkeley City Council have gone into full collaboration-with-fascism mode. The university has now officially "locked down" the campus to prevent protests against these fascists. Halls closed, classes rescheduled, IDs required. An "increased and highly visible" police force will enforce this "perimeter." The Berkeley City Council outrageously voted to give the pigs permission to use pepper spray, a chemical weapon banned in Berkeley since 1997, on the protesters.

This occurs at a time when Antifa has come under a sustained, many-sided and very dangerous political attack, including from liberal and some "progressive" voices. RefuseFascism.org issued a statement this week exposing these attacks, and upholding the legal and fundamental right to self-defense, for Antifa and anyone else.
We'll talk with Sunsara Taylor, writer for revcom.us/Revolution newspaper, and one of the co-initiators of RefuseFascism.org. She is currently in Berkeley, and will be participating in the Berkeley speak out: against white supremacy, misogyny & fascism

NEWS FLASH:
Cleveland Prosecutors Drop Felony Charges Against the Republican Convention Flag-Burners!

We'll be talking with some of the RNC 16.

From press release:

"Big Defeat For Trump," Says Flag Burner Joey Johnson."

Cleveland prosecutors were forced to drop felony charges against Niko and Bo yesterday, after over a year of persecution. "Niko and Bo are free," said Joey Johnson, who won the 1989 Supreme Court case making it protected speech to burn the flag.

Johnson and the two defendants held a press conference today at the (IN)Justice Center Lakeside Entrance Cleveland, OH. Johnson would not say whether they would burn flags in celebration. "Just tell Trump, Pence and the rest of those fascists that we're just getting started. Wait 'til November 4!" said Johnson, referring to a day when daily mass demonstrations are planned to begin all across the country demanding the ouster of Trump and Pence.

La Razón Blindada ("Armored Reason") at the 24th St.Theatre

La Razón Blindada ("Armored Reason") is a witty and provocative play, written and
directed by Argentine playwright Arístides Vargas. It was triply inspired by the classic novel El Quixote by Cervantes, The Truth About Sancho Panza by Franz Kafka, and testimonies from Chicho Vargas and other political prisoners held in Rawson Prison during Argentina's "Dirty War" of the 1970s. Jesus Castaños Chima and Tony Durán reprise their roles as political prisoners who are allowed to interact with one another for one hour a week - but must remain in their chairs and never stand. As they entertain each other with stories of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, we witness the power of the imagination to transport them, and us, despite repressive conditions and even as we remain bound to our seats. Now at the 24th St. Theatre.

We'll sit down with actor Jesus Castaños Chima to talk about the play.

Bruce Cumings on the New Danger of War with North Korea

The interview with Bruce Cumings is rescheduled from last week. This week, North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile 1,700 miles into the Western Pacific Ocean. The missile passed over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, ratcheting up the threat of a war that would likely result in tens of thousands of deaths just in the first few hours. Trump declared that "all options on the table," which everyone understands includes the threat to use massive military force, including nuclear weapons. But who's threatening whom here? And what do people need to do?

We'll hear from Dr. Bruce Cumings, the Gustavus F. and Ann M. Swift Distinguished Service Professor in History, at the University of Chicago, and author of many books, including The Korean War, and Inventing the Axis of Evil, the Truth about North Korea, Iran and Syria (contributor).

Hurricane Harvey: A Natural Disaster, the Crisis of a System
On August 25, Hurricane Harvey tore into the Texas Gulf Coast. This storm, and the unprecedented deluge of rain, brought a catastrophe of mammoth proportions. Thousands of homes were destroyed or severely damaged, along with crucial infrastructure. Millions of people's lives have been thrown into a desperate struggle for survival. Many of these people are poor Chicano, immigrant, and Black people who have worked on the docks and refineries of the area, or toiled in the rice, cotton, and cane fields, or been relegated to dilapidated urban slums and unincorporated rural colonias. Or, people already living on the edge in Houston, including thousands of homeless people.

Travis Morales, a writer for Revolution/revcom.us, has been in Houston since before the hurricane began. He'll talk about why this is a crime of the system, what's going on among the people, and how a socialist system would respond to natural disasters.

Nevertheless, She Persisted
 at the Echo Theatre
Nevertheless, She Persisted is a collection of five world-premiere short plays by five female writers that explore the treatment of women in today's political climate. It is a devastatingly deep examination of the lives and oppression of women.

We'll speak with one of the playwrights,  Jacqueline Wright.
