Implementing All-Out Fascist Repression in the US: J20 Protesters, Professors Under Attack -- and People Fighting Back
Plus, What if a Film Could Change Today's Political Equation? -- An Excerpt from Bob Avakian, The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!

Sam Menefee-Libey, Defending the Inauguration Day (J20) Protesters
The arrest of and charges against more than 200 people demonstrating against Trump’s inauguration was a major escalation of political repression. 194 faced charges carrying more than 60 years in prison! These charges have been courageously resisted by the defendants, and on December 21, 2017, the trial of the first six defendants in this case ended in a stunning defeat for the government. January 18, 2018, the government dropped charges against 129 defendants, but doubled down on its persecution of the remaining 59.The next trial begins April 17.

We'll hear from Sam Menefee-Libey of the Dead City Legal Posse on the latest developments in this important fight.
David Palumbo-Liu, Fascists on Campus - Progressive Professors Under Attack

Placed on watchlists. Harassed on social media. Threatened. This is becoming normal in an environment increasingly hostile to faculty.Over the last year, targeted online harassment of faculty has emerged as a significant threat to academic freedom.

David Palumbo-Liu, Professor of Comparative Literature at Stanford University, has been targeted by the fascist paper, Stanford Review, called a "terrorist" for being a member of the Campus Antifascist Network, and set up for a campaign of on-line harassment.  The American Association of University Professors published a list of fifty professors who have been targeted. Dr. Palumbo-Liu will also talk about the resistance to these attacks, and the hundreds who have stepped forward to support him.
Bob Avakian (BA), THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America: A Better World IS Possible! - Questions and Answers

We'll hear another excerpt from the Q&A that followed Bob Avakian's talk before nationwide protests last November.

In this segment, Bob Avakian responds to the question, "Minorities have been in not a very favorable situation in this country to fight against everything that is going against them… because they’re not in the land where they originally come from. How can we protect those who need to be on the streets fighting with us, how can we protect the ones that are being targeted directly? How can we get them to be on the streets?"

Students are rising, help take it further!

Join RefuseFascism.org this Saturday, March 24, in reaching out to the nationwide marches and rallies against gun violence.

It is good that young people are lifting their heads and demanding change. But, to quote Bob Dylan: “Let us not talk falsely here, the hour is getting late.”
Through no fault of their own, this new generation is coming of age not only in an era of mass shootings, but even more profoundly, at a time when there is a fascist regime in the White House. The Trump/Pence Regime is threatening the future of all of humanity – with their dangerous moves towards nuclear war, their acceleration of environmental destruction, their white supremacy and xenophobic ethnic cleansing, their assault on women and LGBTQ people, and more.
For this reason, humanity needs this generation to stand up against and play a key role in ending much more than school shootings. This new generation has a key role to play in the fight to drive out the Trump/Pence Regime.
Now, we ask you to join RefuseFascism.org in marching together and spreading this unique message at these marches in an even bigger way this weekend.
Join the Refuse Fascism - LA contingent:
8 AM – 5th and Hill (in front of the Metro Red Line Station).  Also look for the Refuse Fascism booth at 1st & Broadway, across the street from LA City Hall. (For more info:  323.946.1742 or socal@refusefascism.org)
> > Donate $25 today. Funds will pay for student organizing kits, stickers & posters. Your donation will go to assist students lwho want to organize their peers RIGHT NOW into a movement to drive this regime from power.

During last Wednesday's nationwide walk-outs, young people were incredibly enthusiastic about this message. They took up signs, flyers, stickers, chants and cheered when we called on them to join in driving out the regime in order to stand with the people of the world, our immigrant sisters and brothers, and more.

Watch this speech by a RefuseFascism.org high school organizer at her high school's walk-out:

You are invited:

Join us on Saturday March 24, from 6 PM-9 PM at Church in Ocean Park (235 Hill St, Santa Monica, CA 90405for a showing of the film of a talk by Bob Avakian:
THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO!
In the Name of Humanity, We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America.
A Better World IS Possible
This film will address:
  • How serious a threat does the Trump/Pence regime pose to humanity? Could fascism really happen here?
  • What is the character of the regime - is it fascist, and if it is, what are the implications?
  • What are the roots of this regime? Is it a terrible aberration, “more of the same”… or something different still?
  • What must be done to stop it? How?
  • Is a better world possible?
  • These questions, whether spoken or implicit, lie at the bottom of nearly every political debate and discussion today. Bob Avakian, in his filmed talk on the Trump/Pence regime, addresses those questions from a lofty level, with a penetrating scientific approach, and with a depth of compassion and breadth of humanity that is unique.
The film of Bob Avakian's new speech addresses the most urgent question of the day: how to understand, and what to do about, the threat to humanity itself posed by the Trump/Pence regime.  This talk -- from the most radical revolutionary on the planet -- makes the case in a compelling way for massive, sustained, nonviolent outpourings, involving diverse perspectives, and continuing until the demand is met: The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!

Avakian traces the roots of the regime -- the deeper and more immediate causes of its rise to power.  This hour-long speech is full of substance and heart.  See trailer below.

Light refreshments will be provided and donations are most welcome but there is no door charge.

Illegitimate Arrests Across the Country As Activists Disrupt the Fascist Mnuchin and Challenge Him to Debate
“RefuseFascism.org activists on two coasts have been targeted with excessive politically-motivated suppression, repression and governmental snooping, including by the Department of Homeland Security for nothing more than nonviolent political speech. Not only must this repression stop, the message these young women were conveying – exposing the cruel and fascist program of Mnuchin and the Trump/Pence Regime he serves and calling on people to join us in standing up to stop a fascist America – must be heard far and wide.” —RefuseFascism.org

Justice for AJ! Family Members Speak Out on Police Murder of AJ Weber, a 16-year-old Murdered by Sheriffs in Los Angeles

On February 4, Superbowl Sunday, LA Sheriffs' deputies confronted 16-year-old AJ Weber, chased him into the courtyard of the apartment complex in South Central Los Angeles where he lived, and gunned him down. According to witnesses who say AJ's body later, he was shot a dozen times in the back.

The Sheriffs attempted to justify the cold-blooded murder of a Black teenager with a list of familiar lies: AJ "matched the description" (a Black man wearing jeans and a tee shirt); he had a gun, though no gun was found; they feared for their lives; he reached for his waistband.

The family of AJ have been joined by community members and others to confront the killer cops at community meetings and protests. The Sheriffs have responded by terrorizing the community, arresting 15 local people, according to activists.

We'll hear from AJ's friends and family members about the murder, and the ongoing struggle for justice.

Arrests in DC, LA in defense of Steve Mnuchin

Bi-Coastal Arrest Spree In Defense of

Steve “the Mouse” Mnuchin Claims Four More

UDPATE:  Two members of Refuse Fascism and the Revolution Club, LA who were arrested at UCLA last Monday for speaking out against U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and banned from campus, were arrested again this Monday night on UCLA campus for defying this illegitimate ban… and then banned for another 7 days by UC Police and UCLA.

They pledge to be on campus anyway on Tuesday, March 6.
We are calling on everyone to join them.

"We refuse to accept this," said UCLA student, Tala Deloria, "we are being ruled by a fascist regime and UCLA is conciliating with this by saying people who speak out against fascists at school events are 'a danger to students' when Mnuchin and the regime he's part of are the ones posing an existential threat to our planet."

They will be on campus on Tuesday March 6, at 2:30 Haines Hall (375 Portola Plaza) south entrance for an event they've organized, a screening of the film of a talk by Bob Avakian, THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America, A Better World IS Possible.”

Yesterday, Monday, March 5, activists with RefuseFascism.org and the Revolution Club were arrested in Los Angeles and Washington DC for challenging Steve “the Mouse” Mnuchin to debate. This comes on the heels of the widely publicized arrests of protesting students and others during Steve Mnuchin's speech last week at UCLA, footage of which he then begged UCLA to suppress.
RefuseFascism.org denounces this pattern of targeted political persecution of those who dare to speak up and challenge the fascist policies and program of Mnuchin and the Trump/Pence Regime. “The Trump/Pence Regime, including Steve Mnuchin, has no answer to challenge that our activists put to them. Instead, like the fascists they are, they rely on lies and police state repression,” said Sunsara Taylor, spokesperson for RefuseFascism.org.
In Washington, two supporters of Refuse Fascism were illegitimately arrestedwhen they tried to read a challenge to debate directed at Steve Mnuchin in front of the Treasury Building. As of 10:00 pm, the young women have been held for six hours by MPD at the 2nd District. Phone: 202 715 7300.
In Los Angeles, two members of the Los Angeles Revolution Club and RefuseFascism.org, including a student at UCLA, were arrested on UCLA campus in the lobby of a public event. This was six hours after they had posted a video challenging Steve “the Mouse” Mnuchin to debate. These were two of the people arrested during Steve Mnuchin's event last week. The police claim they were in violation of a seven day “ban” on them setting foot on campus, but this claim – like the “ban” itself – is illegitimate.
RefuseFascism.org demands that Steve “the Mouse” Mnuchin show up to debate and answer for his crimes, not send his critics out in handcuffs.
Text of challenge to Steve Mnuchin to debate:
We – the young women from RefuseFascism.org that you were so upset by last Monday at UCLA – challenge you to a debate.
Since the public hasn’t gotten to see the speech that you suppressed due to your thin skin and aversion to people speaking the truth, we want to give you a second chance to defend your cruel life-destroying budget, tax cuts and the fascist regime you’re part of.
Bring your alternative facts and wagon of deadly bullshit, see if you can find a spine, and channel your inner Marie Antoinette. Since you seem so embarrassed, maybe your boss and the fascist-in-chief Trump can give you tips in shameless Nazism.
You seemed so tough gloating about impending nuclear war, but quivered in your jackboots when a 6th grader asked you a challenging question and when we exposed your politics of cruelty and fascism.
But look, we are sympathetic. After all it’s a heavy weight to carry -- installing a fascist regime in the U.S… All the verbal gymnastics required in justifying starving entire countries into submission to U.S. rule through economic sanctions. And there was so much work involved in stuffing so much mass suffering into that tax bill, further impoverishing the already impoverished… but that’s okay, let them eat cake!
If you’re frightened by the fact that we won’t back down in exposing your fascist lies, we promise to instruct the audience to refrain from those intimidating hisses. You can have Mike “Dark Ages” Pence pass out muzzles at the door and Sarah Huckabully Sanders can referee.
We’ll wipe the floor with you in a debate – anytime, anywhere. You’ll be resting on the interests of your band of fascist troglodytes, we’ll be resting on the interests of the 7 billion people in the world.

"The Young Karl Marx," Interview with the Filmmaker Raoul Peck

We'll talk with Raoul Peck, director and co-writer of "The Young Karl Marx," a new feature film that opens this week in the US. The film brings to life a key five-year period in the life of Karl Marx and his great collaborator Freidrich Engels, as they struggle to bring a new revolutionary science into being.

In 1843, At the age of 26, Karl Marx (August Diehl), with his wife Jenny Marx (Vicky Krieps) is expelled from Cologne by Prussian police. In Paris, they meet young Friedrich Engels (Stefan Konarske), son of a factory owner and author of a brilliant study of the English proletariat. Together, between censorship and police raids, Marx and Engels struggle to bring forward the most scientific method for understanding the world -- and changing it. The film ends as the young revolutionaries finish work on the Communist Manifesto, in early 1848, which is destined to be a year of upheaval and revolution throughout Europe.

At the beginning of the film, there is no Marxism. By the end, it has become a dynamic force for bringing forward a new world.
Raoul Peck is an internationally-acclaimed writer and director born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His earlier films include Lumumba (2000), and I Am Not Your Negro (2016), a documentary about writer James Baldwin.
