Alex Lyras, Plasticity

We'll talk withAlex Lyras, actor and co-author, with Robert McCaskill, of
Plasticity, a new play currently at the Hudson Guild Theatre. In this multimedia production, a comatose man recreates his identity by delving deeply into his memories, while a circle of family members and loved ones debate his care. It is an exploration of brain and consciousness, and what makes us alive and human.

When It's too late to Stop Fascism, According to Stefan Zweig, in interview with George Prochnik

In the 1930s, Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was the most-translated author in the world. He fled Austria just ahead of the Nazi takeover, and lived life as a refugee in New York. In 1941, he spent the final months of his life furiously writing a memoir - a warning to the future. "For the benefit of subsequent generations, who would be tasked with rebuilding society from the ruins, he was determined to trace how the Nazis' reign of terror had become possible, and how he and so many others had been blind to its beginnings," wrote George Prochnik, author of The Impossible Exile: Stefan Zweig at the End of the World. We'll talk with George Prochnik about the assault on the truth, the widespread idea that Hitler could never get into power - or would simply fail in disgrace if he did. And we'll talk about the obvious lessons for today.

George Prochnik is an author of several books and has written for The New YorkerNew York TimesBookforum, and Los Angeles Review of Books. He is editor-at-large for Cabinet magazine.

Ellen Schrecker on Trump, McCarthyism and the University

In a recent interview on the Professor "Watchlist", historian Ellen Schrecker said she wasn't sure whether people would lose their jobs; and then added, "One just hopes that the academic community doesn't fold. It did fold in the 1950s." After describing the treatment of three university professors who were targeted by McCarthy, then fired from the university, with one being sent to prison, Schrecker said: "What made the Red Scare's effect insidious was that it produced not resistance, but silence."

Professor emerita of American history at Yeshiva University, Ellen Schrecker is a leading authority on McCarthyism whose many books include Many Are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America and No Ivory Tower: McCarthyism in the Universities. Schrecker is the former editor of the American Association of University Professors' magazine, Academe. She has been called "the dean of the anti-anti-Communist historians."

Claudia Koonz on the Rise of Fascism in Germany, and Recent Developments in the US.

Claudia Koonz, a historian of Nazi Germany, is the author of Mothers in the FatherlandThe Nazi Conscience, and other works. We'll be talking about the rise and consolidation of fascism in the past with an eye on the recent developments in the US and the threat of the consolidation of a fascist government here.

In remarks about The Nazi Conscience, Claudia Koonz poses the question, "How does it happen that citizens who consider themselves deeply moral can believe that some of their fellow citizens embody a danger so lethal that they must be eliminated?" Her work lays bare the horrors unleashed by the Nazis -- and how so many "good Germans" stood by, waited, and became complicit in these horrors.

Refuse Fascism-LA organizing meeting - TONITE / Wednesday February 8

We received the following from RefuseFascism-LA:

Southern California resisters!

Join Refuse Fascism-LA TONITE / Wednesday for our next organizing meeting
February 8, 6:30 pm
Church of the Epiphany in Lincoln Heights
2808 Altura Street LA
In the face of the dizzying pace of the fascist pronouncements and acts of the Trump/Pence regime, people all over - in likely and unlikely places - are looking for answers, looking for ways to resist, especially in ways which are part of strengthening and growing a larger community of defiance.  One key way to do this is for millions to take up and spread the slogan: "No! In the Name of Humanity-We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America!" This slogan stretches its arms wide to the people of the world, correctly captures the stakes for the future in all its dimensions, and puts before people clearly what must be fiercely opposed.

Getting the unique message, mission and all of the materials of refusefascism.org out broadly is critical right now.
Join us to plan next steps to get the message out that the Trump-Pence regime is fascist and must be driven from power by the actions of millions  -- in the name of humanity - before it can be fully consolidated.

This message has to go to the #NoDAPL protests, to the National General Strike Friday, February 17, demonstrations in support of immigrants, #notmypresident day, defense of Planned Parenthood and other important protests.
You can get to Church of the Epiphany from the 110 by taking exit 26b and going east on Avenue 26.  Avenue 26 is "West Avenue 26" until it crosses Daly Street, where it jogs to the right and becomes "East Avenue 26" on the east side of Daly.  Follow Avenue 26 to Griffin, right on Griffin and right on Altura.
From North Broadway (North of the 5) you can get to the church by turning left on Griffin and then left on Altura.

Fascism on the March, Sharpening Crisis,
and the Urgency to Act

Sunsara Taylor recently wrote that the Trump/Pence regime is fascist and illegitimate, and must be driven out. She said, "Resisting every attack by Trump-Pence is essential, but it alone will not be sufficient. The regime as a whole must be driven from power. This is what we must set our sights on." Sunsara Taylor is a writer for Revolution/revcom.us, and one of the initiators of  Refuse Fascism.

The "Professor Watchlist," the Coming Assault on Academia, and Making the University a Zone of Resistance
We'll hear from Fidel Fajardo-Acostaprofessor of English at Creighton University in Nebraska. Professor Fajardo-Acosta was put on a new academic "watchlist" designed to "name" and intimidate progressive and radical scholars and incite administrative and mob reaction against them. We'll talk about the watchlist, and the importance of academics and the university in resisting fascism.

Erin Brockovich on the Plan to Re-open the Aliso Canyon Gas Field

Consumer Advocate and Environmental Activist Erin Brockovich joins us to talk about plans to re-open the Aliso Canyon gas field. In 2015-2016, the gas field was the site of the biggest gas leak in US history, causing widespread sickness in the nearby community of Porter Ranch. Thousands had to leave their homes. She recently noted that two-thirds of the wells at Aliso Canyon remain unchecked or have failed inspections, putting local residents at unnecessary risk.
