End the Censorship of Books in Prisons:
Prof. Betsy Ginsberg on the Importance of Fighting Censorship

Thousands of books and other materials are being banned from US prisons. Illinois prisons recently banned Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy, the Pulitzer Prize winning work by Heather Ann Thompson. (The Uptown People's Law Center has filed a lawsuit against the ban.)

Betsy Ginsberg will join us to talk about the widespread practice of banning books from prisons, the importance of the case of Blood in the Water, and why it's so important to fight this censorship.

Betsy Ginsberg is a Clinical Associate Professor of Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and the founder and director of the Civil Rights Clinic. The clinic focuses on civil rights and criminal justice and provides representation to individuals and groups whose civil rights have been violated by law enforcement officials. The clinic primarily litigates cases involving police misconduct and the constitutional and statutory rights of prisoners and detainees in federal court. Prior to her present position, Betsy Ginsberg taught at New York University School of Law., and worked as a Staff Attorney with the Prisoners’ Rights Project at the Legal Aid Society.

It should be obvious to anyone listening to KPFK that the station is crucial in these times. We are seeing one after another progressive institution come under attack. Things are closing down, and the clampdown is continuing.

People who listen to KPFK, and The Michael Slate Show, value it -- and need to support it -- in the dark times in which we live.

We are offering Blood in the Water as a thank-you gift. If you haven't given, call 818-985-5735 during the show. You can contribute any time by going to the KPFK Pledge Cart.

Give, and encourage others to give. Share this on social media. Tell your friends.

Blood in the Water is the first definitive history of the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising, the state's savage response, and the prisoners' decades-long struggle for justice.

This book is in high demand among the 2.3 Million prisoners in the U.S. -- and the authorities in one state, Illinois, have responded by banning the book from prisons.

We're giving you the chance to Break the Ban, to get this book into the hands of prisoners at a time when incarcerated people have just staged one of the largest prison strikes in US history. We are partnering with the Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund, who will facilitate getting the books to prisoners.

On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 prisoners took over the Attica Prison in New York. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, the prisoners negotiated for improved conditions. But on September 13, the state sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers into the prison. They killed thirty-nine men - hostages as well as prisoners - and severely wounded more than a hundred.

Blood in the Water breaks through 50 years of state cover-up -- the lies of brutal, murdering prisoners that have been used to justify greater and greater horrors.

The Valve Turners Acquitted after Civil Disobedience Against the Climate Cataclysm

We'll hear from Annette Klapstein, who together with Emily Johnston and others, closed valves on pipelines in Minnesota that carry tar sands oil into the US. A judge dismissed charges before their trial.

On October 11, 2016, five climate activists, The Valve Turners, determined to act in the face of unfolding climate cataclysm, closed safety valves on the 5 pipelines carrying tar sands crude oil into the United States.

This act of climate disobedience shut down 15% of US crude oil imports for nearly a day - the kind of actions they say are necessary to avoid complete cataclysm. The five valve-turners are standing by their actions, saying that they are not only necessary, but morally and legally justified to avoid the catastrophic harm caused to humanity by unprecedented climactic disruption.

Before the charges were dismissed, they had planned to defend their actions as necessary to save future generations. Find out more at 350seattle.org

Stand With & Support the UCLA ProtestersPack the Court Room
and Demand the Charges Be Dropped!

8-11 AM

Airport Courthouse
11701 S. La Cienega Blvd., LA 90045

In Los Angeles, City Attorney Michael Feuer is currently criminally prosecuting 11 people for participating in or supporting such meaningful and much needed political protests against the Trump/Pence regime for its real crimes against humanity, including political protests which have been seen by millions.

Join us in packing the court room & demanding the city attorney drop all charges against ALL defendants.

The multiple misdemeanor charges stem from arrests originating from a public challenges to the fascist Treasury Secretary Steve "Mouse" Mnuchin as well as Rahm Emanuel (Mayor of Chicago) at UCLA.  These actions were sounding the alarm about a fascist regime, and aimed to build a movement to drive out the regime.

These prosecutions come at a crucial moment when millions are recognizing and are agonizing over the danger the Trump Pence regime poses to humanity, and are being challenged to step out of the normal channels of political action and act in meaningful ways, including, mass non-violent and sustained political protests in the face of the unrelenting, escalating actions including the existential threats to humanity and the planet from the Trump/Pence regime. The demand to stop these prosecutions is part of building the movement to drive out the Trump Pence Regime.

-> Call the LA City Attorney at 213-978-8100 to demand ALL the charges against ALL defendants be dropped
--> Invite the defendants to speak in your school class, or to your organization, group, association or union.
--> Donate funds to help with legal expenses and to help notify millions of these cases and promote the demand to DROP THE CHARGES!  (donate.refusefascism.org/RefuseFascismSoCal)

DISCUSSION of the revcom.us article, The Importance of Protesting the Supreme Court Confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh... and Doing So on the Right Terms

October 6—On Saturday afternoon, the full Senate voted 50-48 to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s fascist nominee, to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh was sworn in a short time later. As this was taking place, hundreds angrily protested and denounced Kavanaugh’s appointment, including on the steps of the Supreme Court. In this light, we are reposting this article:

"Brett Kavanaugh represents a grave threat to the future of humanity, and his nomination to the Supreme Court should be thoroughly rejected. As we have written:

"Brett Kavanaugh has a long ugly history in both the executive and judicial branches of the U.S. government in pursuing a reactionary Christian fascist agenda. This proven public record is why his nomination to the Supreme Court should be and must be stopped. Kavanaugh played a thoroughly reactionary role in the Republi-fascist Starr Commission’s inquisitional attempt to impeach Bill Clinton in the 1990s. As a member of the Bush regime he justified torture. Later he said that the president should be immune from prosecution. And his judicial decisions in the last decade trampled on basic constitutional rights especially regarding women and LGBTQ people..."  Read full article HERE.

These charges against the #Freeway9 and UCLA protesters are greasing the skids for fascism.  Fighting these charges is integral to developing the movement to drive out the Trump/Pence regime.

Just posted at revcom.us:
ALERT

GoFundMe.com cancelled the campaign to raise funds to promote the new speech by Bob Avakian
This is unacceptable! Protest, Donate and Spread the Word

October 5, 2018 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us
We've just learned that GoFundMe.com cancelled the campaign to raise funds to promote the speech by Bob Avakian, "Why We Need An Actual Revolution and How We Can Really Make Revolution." This will premiere online on October 19 and needs to be seen by many thousands who hate the way people are forced to live under this system. Over $2,300 of the $5,000 goal had been raised which has now all been refunded to the donors.
GoFundMe has yet to give a reason for this, but we are waiting for their response. This is unacceptable! What's at stake here is whether or not people will be able to get a basic understanding of the truth that this system can't be reformed... the need and possibility for a radically different world, and how to fight for that world through an actual revolution... or even be able to debate this!
What you can do:
1. CONTRIBUTE funds to spread the word of the online release of this speech. This is all the more reason you are needed... to get word of this speech everywhere, up from the grassroots. Spread the message that the defenders of the old order don't want you to hear. Spread this trailer and ask others to donate. For now, contribute HERE.
2. Write to GoFundMe in protest. Contact them through their help page here: https://www.gofundme.com/mvc.php?route=contact/suggest or on social media. Demand they re-instate the campaign from RCP Publications!
3. Double down! We're now 10 days away from when our promotional campaign was going to start and just 14 days away from the online premiere. We had an initial goal of $5,000... let's double it! This message of real revolution is going up against the whole status quo... all the naysayers who tell you to accept the horrors of this system and confine ourselves to the margins. Say NO to this! Contribute generously, spread this message, organize a fundraiser or bake sale. If you already contributed, and your money was refunded, contribute again HERE and give more than your initial contribution. Don't let this message be suppressed!
Come back to this page, and @tuneintorevcom for updates of the situation. Write to revolution.reports@yahoo.com with your ideas and suggestions.
Two chances to view this film on Sunday, Oct. 7:

a)  Noon to 2:30 PM - Fundraising Salon hosted by The Bob Avakian Institute @ Café Tropical (back room)
2900 Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake, (corner of Parkman Avenue).  Come early and pick up lunch and great coffee at the Café.

b) 3 - 6 PM - Hosted by the Revolution Club at their organizing center @ 2716 S. Vermont Ave., Unit 8 (upstairs - enter in the back)
After the screenings we’ll hang out, share our thoughts about the film and the world around us, and brainstorm about ways that this film will be seen, discussed and debated among people throughout society.

Carl Dix, Justice For Laquan McDonald!

Carl Dix is in Chicago carrying out revolutionary work around the trial of the cop who murdered Laquan McDonald. He recently wrote: "The trial of the Chicago cop who gunned down 17-year-old Laquan McDonald four years ago is nearing the end. The cop’s lawyers have been allowed to parade witness after witness on the stand to testify about Laquan’s previous run-ins with police and any other conflicts with authority figures. The court is treating it like Laquan is the criminal who faces charges and not the murdering pig who shot Laquan 16 times as he walked away with his hands at his side.

"This trial is looking more and more like preparation to justify letting another killer cop walk free. Everybody who is tired of seeing this—cops who have stolen the lives of Black and Brown people walking free—happen again and again needs to prepare to respond to the jury’s verdict."

Carl Dix is a representative of the Revolutionary Communist Party. For more on the trial, go to revcom.us
