Historian Heather Ann Thompson on the Nationwide Prison Strike

On August 21—the 47th anniversary of the murder of the revolutionary leader George Jackson by guards at California’s San Quentin prison—prisoners in 17 states began a strike. The strike is set to end September 9—the anniversary of the heroic 1971 rebellion at Attica prison in New York. Heather Ann Thompson will be joining us to talk about the conditions that motivate the strike, the prisoners' demands, and the historic importance of this action. Heather Ann Thompson is a historian at the University of Michigan, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy.

We'll also hear voices from the Attica Rebellion.

Support the #Freeway9 & the UCLA protesters of Steve Mnuchin and Rahm Emanuel events

The Los Angeles City Attorney has just criminally charged 11 members of Refuse Fascism, including numerous members of the Revolution Club in LA, an Iraq War vet, as well as a noted artist and USC professor. This is a serious attack on the movement against fascism. The multiple misdemeanor charges stem from two actions on the 101 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles and from arrests originating from a public challenge to the fascist Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin at UCLA.

We'll talk with some of the defendants who are facing trial now, and how people can support these resisters.

Monday - Pack the Courtroom

Received from Refuse Fascism - LA:

Monday, August 27 @ 8 AM
PACK THE COURT ROOM!
Press Conference & Court Support

The first set of protesters (pictured above) have been summoned to court on August 27, 28, 29 & 30th.
Join us starting Monday, August 27 for a press conference outside of the Courthouse (1945 S. Hill Street) on Washington Blvd & Hill St. at 8:00 am.

The Los Angeles City Attorney has just criminally charged 11 members of Refuse Fascism, including numerous members of the Revolution Club in LA, an Iraq War vet, as well as a noted artist and USC professor, whose arraignment dates begin August 27 and carry through September and October. The multiple misdemeanor charges stem from 3 significant events, including 2 actions on the 101 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles and from arrests stemming from a public challenge to Trump/Pence regime cabinet member U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin at UCLA.

These criminal charges by the LA City Attorney represent an effort by the state to silence dissent against the Trump/Pence regime. They specifically target members of Refuse Fascism, including revolutionary communists and a professor, for being unwavering in their pledge to not “stand aside” while there is still a chance to stop a regime that imperils humanity and the earth itself. The defendants are calling for tens of millions to get out of our “comfort zones,” and not allow differences to stand in the way of rising together in an unprecedented, unrelenting mass struggle to demand: This Nightmare Must End - The Trump/Pence Regime MUST GO!

They need your support, now:
** Call the LA City Attorney at 213-978-8100 to demand ALL the charges against ALL defendants be dropped
** Attend the Press Conference in front of Metropolitan Courthouse at 8:00 am, Monday, August 27 ~ 1945 S. Hill St., LA, CA 90007
** Invite the defendants to speak in your school class, or to your organization, group, association or union
** Donate funds to help with legal expenses and to help notify millions of these cases and promote the demand to DROP THE CHARGES!

Received from the Revolution Club - LA:

On Sunday, August 26:
Take the Revolution—and the Need for Determined Struggle to Drive Out the Trump/Pence Regime—into the Nationwide Protests to Stop the Appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

Soon, on September 4, hearings are set to begin in the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. If this confirmation goes forward, it will mark a radical transformation of the highest court in the land—a major leap in the consolidation of Trump/Pence’s fascist America.
Protests against this nomination have been called around the country for August 26; here is a link to find a protest near you: uniteforjustice2018.com.
Everyone who refuses to accept a fascist America should mobilize for and participate in these protests, uniting with people’s righteous outrage while also putting forward the need for, and organizing new people to take up, truly determined political struggle of masses of people to STOP this confirmation and drive out the whole fascist Trump/Pence regime as laid out in the Call to Action from RefuseFascism.org.
Those who see the need for revolution should contribute to this fight from the perspective of—and while boldly propagating the need for and organizing people into the movement for—an actual revolution as concentrated in HOW WE CAN WIN—How We Can Really Make Revolution.

This Week:

ICE Arrests Immigrant Journalist Manuel Duran Ortega; Sunsara Taylor on the Kavanaugh; HAITI at the Theatricum Botanicum

James Tager, the Deputy Director of Free Expression Research and Policy at PEN America. We'll be talking about the political persecution of Memphis Journalist Manuel Duran Ortega (Left), an immigrant from El Salvador, who was arrested by Memphis police while covering an anti-ICE protest, and then turned over to ICE, which is now threatening him with deportation.

PEN America, founded in 1922, "stands at the intersection of literature and human rights to protect open expression in the United States and worldwide."

Sunsara Taylor: Kavanaugh, the Constitution, Resistance, and the Need for a REAL Revolution
Sunday, August 26, people across the US will take to the streets to protest Donald Trump’s nomination of the Christian Fascist Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, which would give the court a fascist majority. We'll talk with Sunsara Taylor, writer for Revcom.us/Revolution newspaper, and co-initiator of RefuseFascism.org, about why it is critical that people turn out and protest, not to bring people back into the system, but as part of waking up others to go forward in greater struggle in the streets, outside the normal channels. We'll talk about the actual nature of the US Constitution and the leap toward fascism that Kavanaugh represents -- and why we need an actual revolution and a radically new society.

HAITI, an Important Play is Re-Staged at the Theatricum Botanicum

Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum presents the first-ever revival of the historical drama about the Haitian revolution, Haiti by William DuBois, first performed on the stage at New York's Lafayette Theatre in Harlem in 1938. The play depicts the events of the first victorious slave rebellion in history, the 1802 uprising led by Toussaint L'Ouverture.

We'll speak with actors Earnestine Phillips, Rodrick Jean-Charles and Tiffany Coty

Donate and Call Now to Free 3 Revolution Club Members in LA

Received from the Revolution Club Los Angeles:

Three members of the Revolution Club in LA were outrageously arrested for going out to a public park and talking to people about revolution.

Call the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center at 213 356-3448.  Tell them to release the Revolution Club members now.
PROTEST and PRESS CONFERENCE
6pm TONIGHT

Normandie Park
1527 Normandie Avenue

On Friday, August 10, 2018, three members of the LA Revolution Club went out to Normandie Park during a Summer Night Lights event,. These are summer events where the police act like they're doing masses of people who live around these parks a favor by keeping the lights on a little longer and not running them out of the park. They prop up an "official staff" to make it seem as if people being allowed to stay in the park after dark is something to celebrate and be thankful to the police for.

Three members of the Revolution Club showed up to talk to people about the criminal and murderous nature of this system and the need to overthrow it. A petty overseer found this "inappropriate" and called on the cops there to remove the members of the Revolution Club -- FROM A PUBLIC PARK!

When the crew didn't return to our organizing center and weren't answering their phones, one of us went down to the park to investigate and ask people if they had seen people in BA Speaks: REVOLUTION--Nothing Less! t-shirts passing out the pamphlet. Someone eventually told us that they had been arrested and they directed us to the person who would know more.  When approached and asked if she knew more about the Revolution Club members and the arrests she smugly replied that the police arrested them because "They weren't listening...they were going around talking to people while the program was going on." So we asked, "They were arrested for talking to people at a public park?"  She responded, "Well, the things they were saying were inappropriate anyways."

The Revolution Club has been going out broadly getting out and getting into the pamphlet HOW WE CAN WIN--How We Can Really Make Revolution with people.  This is an historic document that not only calls out the on monstrousness and utter unreformability of this system, it also lays out how people can get organized now into the movement for an actual revolution to bring something far better into being. This is something the armed enforcers, who constantly murder and brutalize people, do not want to see connected up with those this system has no future for. They seized on this opportunity to go after the forces who actually do represent the interest of the masses of people, with these blatantly obvious illegitimate arrests.

The members of the Revolution Club are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown LA, charged with "trespassing" (602.1 pc) at a park that was purposefully open to the public all night long.

This is a violation of people's legal rights and the people will not tolerate the authorities to arrest people for merely TALKING about the fight for a better world in a public space.

We're told by the LAPD Asst. Watch Commander at MDC that two of them are being held in "padded cells" because they didn't answer questions, including by medical personnel in the jail!  There is a potentially dangerous logic to this type of confinement - the revolutionaries need to get out of jail and be back on the streets right away.

Call the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center at 213 356-3448.  Tell them to release the Revolution Club members now.

The police are refusing to release the three on their own recognizance and have set bail at $5,000 each!  Donate for BAIL and a DEFENSE FUND: tinyurl.com/fundtherevolution.

The Michael Slate Show: Ann Wright, Attack on Freedom Flotilla; Ilan Pappe, Israeli Assaults on Gaza & the "Jewish Nation State" Bill

Tune in Friday, August 3, 10 - 11 AM, Pacific Time
KPFK 90.7 FM, kpfk.org
Ann Wright, the Violent Seizure of Gaza Freedom Flotilla Ship Al Awda, by Israeli Soldiers

Ann Wright joins us to talk about the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, and the attack on one of the ships, the Al Awda, by Israeli soldiers in international waters, and the kidnapping of those on the ship. The vessel was attempting to deliver food and medical supplies to Gaza, which has been under siege by Israel since 2007. Ann Wright is an activist and a former US ambassador.

Historian and Author Ilan Pappe on Israel's Genocidal Assaults on Gaza, and the Israeli "Jewish Nation State" Basic Law.

Israeli forces have shot over 1000 non-violent Palestinian protesters since March 30, killing 152. Israel has continued not only its deadly assaults, but the destruction of the infrastructure, making food and clean water increasingly hard to get. This is incremental genocide. At the same time, the Israeli legislature has made a new basic law, granting Jewish people rights that do not apply to others, and embracing settlements as "a national value."

Ilan Pappe will talk about all this. Ilan Pappe has published fifteen books on the Middle East, including The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. He is the director of the European Center of Palestine Studies, University of Exeter.

FOR A  CONTRIBUTION OF $75, TEN MYTHS ABOUT ISRAEL, BY ILAN PAPPE. In this groundbreaking and fearless book, published on the fiftieth anniversary of the Occupation, the outspoken and radical Israeli historian Ilan Pappe examines the most contested ideas concerning the origins and identity of the contemporary state of Israel.

FOR A CONTRIBUTION OF $120, "KILLING GAZA," A FILM BY MAX BLUMENTHAL AND DAN COHEN.

"Killing Gaza" is much more than a documentary about Palestinian resilience and suffering. It is a chilling visual document of war crimes committed by the Israeli military, featuring direct testimony and evidence from the survivors, delivered to them often just days after escaping indiscriminate shelling, bombings and summary executions.
