This year, the Anne Frank Centre for Mutual Respect warned of “alarming parallels” between Donald Trump and Hitler, likening present-day US to the “escalating steps of oppression” that led to the Holocaust in the 1930s and 1940s. In that light, filmmaker David Zeiger and artist Perry Hoberman are launching a series of film screenings on the question facing Americans today: Is it Fascism? (and what can we do about it?)

The first screenings will be on Sunday, May 6, with the Academy Award nominated documentary Prisoner of Paradise, and The Mortal Storm, the MGM classic starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan that prompted Hitler to ban all MGM movies from Germany. Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion with presenters including Prisoner of Paradise co-director Stuart Sender, Jan-Christopher Horak, director of the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and journalist and author Robert Scheer.
Prisoner of Paradise, screening at noon, is a gripping 2002 Academy Award-nominated documentary, directed by Malcolm Clarke and Stuart Sender, that tells the story of Kurt Gerron, the most beloved Jewish actor in Weimar Germany, a star of caberet and film, who found himself making a famous Nazi propaganda film about the Thereisenstadt concentration camp…before he was transported to Auschwitz and killed, just days before the war ended. The film was nominated for the 2003 Academy Award as Best Feature Documentary. Clarke won the Directors Guild of Canada Award, and he and Sender were together nominated for the 2003 Directors Guild of America Award.
The Mortal Storm, screening at 3pm, is a 1940 drama from MGM, directed by Frank Borzage and starring Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. The film examines the impact of fascism as it develops in Germany in the 1930s. One of the few anti-Nazi Hollywood films released before America’s entry into World War II, the film stars Jimmy Stewart as a German who refuses to join the rest of his small Bavarian town in supporting Nazism. Variety wrote “It is not the first of the anti-Nazi pictures, but it is the most effective film expose to date of the totalitarian idea, a slugging indictment of the political and social theories advanced by Hitler.
David Zeiger is an American film director and producer, perhaps best known for the documentary Sir! No Sir! (2005), the PBS series Senior Year (2002), Displaced in the New South (1996), and The Band (1998). He received a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship for his debut narrative feature, Sweet Old World, which premiered in 2012 at the Atlanta Film Festival.  Sir! No Sir! won the 2005 Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary, and went on to win Best Documentary at the Hamptons International Film Festival, the Seeds of War Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, and Best Film on War and Peace at the Vermont International Film Festival.
Perry Hoberman is a media artist, educator, inventor, activist and musician. Hoberman has exhibited internationally, with major shows throughout the USA and Europe, and has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including Guggenheim and Rockefeller Fellowships, as well as prizes from Prix Ars Electronic and the ICC Biennale. He has taught and lectured widely, with appointments at Cooper Union, San Francisco Art Institute, California Institute of the Arts, School of Visual Arts, and is currently an Associate Research Professor in the Division of Media Arts + Practice at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

SAT 4/28: Riverside Screening of BA Talk: The Trump Pence Regime Must Go...

Received from Refuse Fascism-Inland Empire:

You are invited:

Saturday, April 28 from 2 - 4:30 PM
Back to the Grind Coffee (downstairs)

3575 University Ave, downtown Riverside

for a screening and discussion of the film of a talk by Bob Avakian:
THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO!
In the Name of Humanity, We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America.
A Better World IS Possible
A regime that could destroy civilization.
You think you know...but you don't.
This film will address:
  • How serious a threat does the Trump/Pence regime pose to humanity? Could fascism really happen here?
  • What is the character of the regime - is it fascist, and if it is, what are the implications?
  • What are the roots of this regime? Is it a terrible aberration, “more of the same”… or something different still?
  • What must be done to stop it? How?
  • Is a better world possible?
  • These questions, whether spoken or implicit, lie at the bottom of nearly every political debate and discussion today. Bob Avakian, in his filmed talk on the Trump/Pence regime, addresses those questions from a lofty level, with a penetrating scientific approach, and with a depth of compassion and breadth of humanity that is unique.
The film of Bob Avakian's new speech addresses the most urgent question of the day: how to understand, and what to do about, the threat to humanity itself posed by the Trump/Pence regime.  This talk -- from the most radical revolutionary on the planet -- makes the case in a compelling way for massive, sustained, nonviolent outpourings, involving diverse perspectives, and continuing until the demand is met: The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!

Avakian traces the roots of the regime -- the deeper and more immediate causes of its rise to power.  This hour-long speech is full of substance and heart.  See trailer below.

Bob Avakian is the most radical revolutionary on the planet and architect of a new communism.

When Zionism Rubs Up Against Reality, by Stanley Cohen
In "When Zionism Rubs Up Against Reality," Stanley Cohen, attorney and human rights advocate, recently wrote, "With conscience, and vision as an outsider looking in, today, it is simply impossible not to feel an overwhelming sense of sheer revulsion when, if one is a caring being, an honest scan comes across Israel."

We'll talk with Stanley Cohen about his condemnation of Israel's crimes against humanity. As an attorney, Stanley has represented hackers, Occupy activists, the homeless, anti-war protesters, Muslim clerics, American Indian activists, and Anonymous in the PayPal 14 case.

Direct from Gaza! Dr. Asaad Abu Sharkh on the Great March of Return. Ann Wright, Freedom Flotilla 2018, Boats to Gaza. BA, Trump/Pence Must Go
The Great March of Return Courageously Faces Israeli Bullets
Direct from Gaza - we hear from Dr. Asaad Abu Sharkh, spokesperson for the Great March of Return. From inside the US/Israeli prison that is Gaza, this interview was recorded earlier - under difficult conditions.

For the past two weeks, thousands and thousands of unarmed Palestinians, defying Israeli snipers, tanks, tear gas, and drones, have participated in the Great March of Return at the Gaza-Israel border. They are demanding their right to return to lands stolen from them and an end to the cruel and crippling blockade imposed on them by Israel and Egypt—and to assert their humanity. Israeli soldiers have responded with cold-blooded murder, killing 30 so far, with up to 2500 wounded or injured.

2018 Gaza Freedom Flotilla Sails Against the Blockade of Gaza, Interview with Ann Wright
Ann Wright joins us to talk about the 2018 Gaza Freedom Flotilla boats to Gaza. Israel and the US have made Gaza into the world's largest open-air prison. For over a decade, Israel has maintained an inhumane and destructive blockade. The United Nations now says that Gaza will become uninhabitable by the year 2020 because of this Israeli blockade.

Ann Wright was an ambassador during the administration of George W. Bush, when she resigned in protest of the War in Iraq. Since that time, she has fearlessly worked for peace all over the world, especially in the very countries the US attacked since 2001. She has worked with The Freedom Flotilla Coalition for seven years as they have carried out non-violent direct actions aimed at raising international awareness and putting pressure on the international community to end. These attempts to deliver humanitarian aid have been met with arrests and murder by Israeli forces.

We'll hear a clip from this important film, and one that's extremely relevant amid all the talk about the "blue wave": Why is it the Democrats can only try to resolve this on the terms of the system?

From Refuse Fascism LA - Drop the Charges Against UCLA Rahm Emanuel Protester!

Received from Refuse Fascism-LA:

On Feb 12 at Royce Hall on UCLA, three volunteers with Refuse Fascism and the Revolution Club were arrested, when Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel was invited by UCLA to share what he has done to supposedly help the people of Chicago! The activists called out Emanuel's poisonous lies during this event. One of the three volunteers, who was assaulted by the UC Police, is now being charged with 2 misdemeanors.  We are calling on people to demand that the charges be dropped. In addition, UCLA banned those arrested from the campus after their arrests for 7 days!   As the New Call from Refuse Fascism states: "Fascism rules by organized repression and terror by the government: civil liberties are stripped away, law re-written, dissent criminalized, the courts packed with fascists, and the separation of powers and church and state ultimately eviscerated. As part of radically remaking society, the Trump/Pence regime must sharply attack those in positions of power who oppose them."   Standing with those who are protesting outrages and injustices against humanity is a crucial component of the fight to drive the Trump/Pence regime.  Everyone should contact the Los Angeles City Attorney to drop the charges against the protester arrested and now being charged from the February 12 at UCLA  and for UCLA to drop the ban!*

Sasha Abramsky, Trump and the History of 1930s Germany. Bob Avakian, Trump/Pence Must Go, the Role of Students. Andy Zee, Why Nothing Short Of Removing This Whole Illegitimate Regime From Power Will Stop This Nightmare
As Trump consolidates his power, the history of 1930s Germany repeats itself -- Sasha Abramsky

Writer Sasha Abramsky wrote in the Sacramento Bee last month, "Recently, . . . I have been reading about Germany in the 1930s, about what happened when a great and cultured country was handed over to a gang of sadists, misogynists, and racists, when security services were given carte blanche to use the methods of the iron fist, and when torturers were rewarded by promotion rather than prosecuted for their crimes.

"And I have been reading about what happened when the great mass of the citizenry either supported the transformation or sat back and did nothing, some mistaking their silence and disdain for effective opposition, others simply hoping against hope for 'normalcy' to return."

We'll speak with Sasha Abramsky about this. He is a writer who teaches at UC Davis.
More From the Q&A of The Talk by Bob Avakian, THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America. A Better World IS Possible

If more people watched this talk, it could change today’s political equation. But far too few have seen this talk, or even know about it. You are needed to be part of changing this.

This week we'll hear, "Could you speak to the role of students, including that there have been vicious attacks on critical thinking at known liberal or historically radical places, i.e. Berkeley, and how should we approach bringing students forward to the call of Refuse Fascism as well as unleashing them in that process?" Access the film, the complete Q&A and much more here.

Andy Zee, Why Nothing Short Of Removing This Whole Illegitimate Regime From Power Will Stop This Nightmare

Andy Zee, spokesperson for Revolution Books, NYC and co-initiator of RefuseFascism.org, joins us to talk about the shocking damage already done to lives here and around the world by the Trump/Pence regime, the far worse things they are posed to do, including threatening WAR, even nuclear war.

Nothing short of removing this whole illegitimate regime from power will stop this nightmare, and a crucial part of this is Refuse Fascism.

Read and sign the new call from Refuse Fascism here.

Refuse to Accept a Fascist America!

Received from Refuse Fascism-LA:

Final Version of Refuse Fascism 2018 Call to Action April 2, 2018. Read, shareadd your name to this new Call to Action that diagnoses the existential threat to humanity posed by the Trump/Pence Regime and the only way to stop it:

This Nightmare Must End:
The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!

In the Name of Humanity,
We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America

We are horrified and angered at the shocking damage already done to lives here and around the world by the Trump/Pence regime.  We recognize that they are poised to do far worse, including threatening WAR, even nuclear war.  Through an unrelenting barrage of daily outrages and twitter outbursts, the Trump/Pence regime is radically remaking society – step by step hammering into place a vicious American fascism. This is not insult or exaggeration, it is what they are doing.
Therefore, WE RESOLVE that nothing short of removing this whole illegitimate regime from power will stop this nightmare.
There is a way to do this.  To do so, we must cast aside illusions and self-delusions:
All too many people think and act as if what we face is just the worst of pendulum swings between Republicans and Democrats. NO! This regime if left in power will effect a thoroughly reactionary restructuring of society.
If we think that the normal processes of the 2018 or 2020 elections, or the Mueller investigation will, by themselves, redress the situation that humanity faces, we are not understanding the determination of these fascists in power to shatter norms – even though they have been doing so for over a year.
If we think that the heightened activism of the past year, either by itself or together with the elections will stop this regime, we are missing how much harm this regime has already done, absorbing individual protests as it rapidly moves its agenda forward on multiple fronts.
If we are not as outraged and motivated to act today as we were right after the election, we are on our way to accepting or ignoring a great horror that builds daily. If we adjust to the injustice of this regime, do not ask how the German people could have accepted Nazism in the 1930s.
