Los Angeles prosecutors and the LAPD are revealing their true repressive nature in the prosecution of 11 members of Refuse Fascism and the Revolution Club (the LA11). The LA11 are facing criminal charges for a range of protests against the Trump/Pence fascist regime. These prosecutions are an escalation in the criminalization of political protest and a leap in state repression, moves that are greasing the skids for fascism.

Since last December, Trump has repeatedly threatened to invoke emergency powers to build a wall on the southern border of the US. The declaration of such a state of emergency can be made by the president alone. And such a declaration would give the president access to other extraordinary powers, like freezing Americans' bank accounts, putting the Internet under government control, and many more that would fundamentally alter the method by which the US is governed. We'll talk about this very dangerous situation with Andrew Boyle, Counsel in the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice.
Laquan McDonald. A judge has now handed down a sentence. For the racist murder of Laquan McDonald, this police officer got a sentence of 6 years, 9 months—and he could be out in half that. This comes just one day after another judge handed down a verdict of “not guilty” on three Chicago cops on charges of lying about and conspiring to cover up the murder of Laquan. And it comes as the the genocidal murders of Black and Brown people continue and intensify. We'll talk about this with Carl Dix, a representative of the Revolutionary Communist Party.

We'll speak with Kade Crockford, Director of the Massachusetts ACLU Technology for Liberty Program on the FBI, the targeting of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and the Bureau's attempts to acquire advanced technology, like facial recognition software. She warns, "The FBI that spied on King and today classifies Black civil rights activists as 'extremists' is now partnering with Big Tech to amass unprecedented surveillance powers that history has taught us will be used to target communities of color, religious minorities, dissidents and immigrants."
On the 47th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade we'll speak with Amelia Bonow, co-founder of Shout Your Abortion, which encourages and enables women to share their abortion experiences online without “sadness, shame or regret” for the purpose of “destigmatization, normalization, and putting an end to shame." Tens of thousands worldwide have shared their abortion experiences online using the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion. Shout Your Abortion recently projected their slogan "Abortion is Freedom," Trump Tower in New York.

Alvaro Huerta, assistant professor of urban and regional planning and ethnic and women’s studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, wrote in a recent piece, "While Mexican immigrants continue to be demonized and characterized as 'criminals,' 'drug dealers,' 'rapists,' 'illegal aliens' and 'invaders' by American leaders and millions of white citizens, they have essentially become 'foreigners in their own land.'" He lays bare the history of the US and Mexico, a history of the theft of half the territory of Mexico in a war of plunder, of broken treaties and the exploitation of generations of Mexican and other Latino immigrants as a key part of the foundation of the US economy -- even while the system continues to deny their basic humanity.
The first in a series of trials of activists with No More Deaths, is nearing the end in a Tucson, Arizona courtroom. The activists are accused of various misdemeanors for leaving water, food, socks and blankets in the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge on the southern border between Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. Since the early 2000's, US policy has been to use the deadly conditions on the border as a weapon, to deter migrants crossing the border. Over 3000 have died.
